Re: Buying Organic
Tue, March 18, 2008 - 11:35 AMI knew Boca was under the Kraft conglom, but didn't know LightLife was Conagra. Good thing I chose Yves tofurkey slices over LightLife long ago... It was nice to see that there are a few "independent" brands out there to balance out the creepiness of the "owned" brands.

Re: Buying Organic
Wed, March 19, 2008 - 3:42 AMThanks for posting that. There was a chart on the wall at Rainbow that was similar to that. I had the link to the site they got it from but can't find it again.
This kind of confirms to me that it is better to stick as close as possible to a whole-grain diet and avoid overly processed stuff.
I wonder how coincidental it is that now that we see organics appearing in places like Walmart that the entire field of organics is close to being wiped out?

Its just like the way in America the health "care" industry is actually what deprives people of healthcare, or the "music" industry is responsible for the abolition of talent and quality from music. It seems the new "organic" industry is doing its magic...

Re: Buying Organic
Sat, March 22, 2008 - 11:22 PMI'm surprised to see Seeds of Change is run by the Mars company. I remember buying seeds from the gardening catalogs of their organic seeds, and saw they branched out into selling food about 10 years ago. Their food is very tasty, if a little pricey. It doesn't seem logical that they would sell out to Mars company.
Does this link mean these well known healthy items are actually owned by those larger companies? I'm also surprised to see Westbrae is owned by Heinz.

Re: Buying Organic
Mon, March 24, 2008 - 8:45 PMToday I was in Whole Foods checking out the ingredients of some of the "premium" packaged granolas. There are quite a few new brands at the store of these expensive granolas which are anywhere from $4 per pound and up (some are as high as $7 or more). What is shocking and appalling was how many did not contain organic ingredients. One of them listed canola oil which was not organic. Canola is one of the most heavily cultivated GM croips now so if it is not explicitly being claimed as organic, it almost certainly is GM or at least highly contaminated with it.
Whole Foods' ambivalence on the whole GM issue is really sickening. Their standing for "higher standards" would be like someone claiming to be a crusader for human rights in 1943 Germany walking to work each day smelling the burning human flesh, and seeing the smoke rising in the distance, and doing nothing about it whatsoever. The bodies are burning right now. Organics are being decimated. And John Mackey and his jackass cadre happily wander about with the smoke filling their nostrils, basking in the great profits they are making, not giving a damn. -
