Someone HELP!
I've been a happy vegan for over three years now, and thought I knew enough about nutrition to be eating a balanced, healthy diet.
However, the past few months I've been craving eggs like a madwoman. It's that type of craving where my body feels like it "needs" something lacking in my diet, and from it's previous experience, associates that nutrient with eggs.
Since I'm not intending to go out and eat an egg, is there anyone here who can tell me what it is my body might need, and what vegan source I can get it from? I take a really good multi, and eat a balanced, whole food diet, so I'm at a loss here.
Thanks and love

Re: Why am I craving eggs?
Tue, January 17, 2006 - 6:27 PMNutritionists refer to eggs, particularly egg whites, as The Perfect Protein. If it's something nutritional you're lacking, I can't imagine what it would be besides protein. Unless your body has stopped making it's own cholesterol and you suddenly need an external source (I know of one real live human being with this problem - veganism would probably kill her).
Could it be a comfort thing, though? Maybe you need to make yourself a nice tofu scramble. -

Re: Why am I craving eggs?
Tue, January 17, 2006 - 7:38 PMCould be that your body is low in one or more of the 9 essential amino acids that are present in eggs. That doesn't mean that you can't get them strictly from vegan sources, but they are all present in eggs, so perhaps it's an association your subconscious is making. You could look into amino acid supplementation; there's plenty of powders and pills out there, especially those for bodybuilding.
I would recommend supplementing your diet with Red Star nutritional yeast, lecithin, and flax seeds (or flax meal or flax oil), if you aren't already. Those 3 things contain most of the same nutritional elements as eggs, especially the linoleic acid and omega -3 essential fatty acids. It's easy to toss a spoon of each of these into a blender with juice, protein powder, a banana and some other fruit for a great smoothie. I have one every morning.
One caveat: lecithin and flax tend to oxidize quickly, so it's best to buy them in a fresh source (such as in refrigerated, vacuum-packed containers) and to keep them closed up and refrigerated while you use them. Oxidized oils contain free-radicals and can actually do more harm than good.
FWIW, the Pork Store Cafes here in San Francisco have an AMAZING brunch dish called "vegan delight". Braised tofu, fresh spinach and tomatoes, mushrooms scrambled together, a huge side of the best hash browns I've ever had, and toast, biscuits or grits (the biscuits aren't vegan). A lot of fresh, super-tasty food for about $8. Oh--and the Pork Store on 16th between Valencia and Guerrero is *much* nicer than the original one on Haight.

That's because they're cooked in bacon grease.
When did the Pork Store on 16th open?? -

Do you know this for a fact?
Last week, I sat at the bar at the Haight St. location and watched the cooks in action. They drizzled a liquid oil on the grille before putting the potatoes on. Given the high temperature they cook at, I would guess it's peanut oil, which doesn't smoke as readily as other oils. I don't know what temperature bacon grease smokes at, but I'd guess it's pretty low. -

Re: Why am I craving eggs?
Wed, January 18, 2006 - 6:21 AMI've spent hours watching those guys cook. While the grease they specifically pour on the potatoes is probably vegetable based (liquid at room temp and all), those hash browns are cooked on the same surface as the bacon. I don't see anyone spit shining the griddle between bacon and potatoes or segregating potato vs. meaty areas to cook on. -
-
Re: Why am I craving eggs?
Wed, January 18, 2006 - 1:55 PMActually, from what I've seen, their hashed brown area is specifically the _back_ of the grille, *behind* the area where the bacon and other meats are cooked. But frankly, it wouldn't bother me even if the potatoes were cooked on the same grille as anything else. The amount of animal substances that they might pick up would be microscopic; probably about the same as you might get at a taqueria, where the serving spoons from the various meat containers are constantly being passing over the containers of beans, rice, tofu, whatever, or from the tortillas being tossed on the same grille as the meat. Or, for that matter, the amount of animal substances that one sometimes accidentally gets in an organic salad (I once found a lovely--but sadly dead--iridescent beetle in my salad at Herbivore).
So, if the grilling arrangement at the Pork Store bothers you, what *do* you eat there? -

It doesn't. I was just pointing out why the has browns taste so good. I'm not above liking them. But I go there for the vegan delight, which is cooked in it's own segregated pan and still tastes fab. ::sigh:: another thing I miss about SF! -

Re: Why am I craving eggs?
Wed, January 18, 2006 - 9:28 PMOK, now I'm totally confused. I was recommending the Vegan Delight, which includes the hash browns. So, you get the Vegan Delight *without* the hash browns?

This was an awesome thread until it got derailed. Please resolve it in 1 post each, take it to another thread, or take it outside. -

This is the maximum depth. Additional responses will not be threaded.

Thu, January 19, 2006 - 5:50 PMOh Jenni -
Curran and I don't fight anymore! We've found a Greater Evil to join forces against.
But we can probably stop talking about our favorite tofu scramble in the why-am-I-craving-eggs thread, even though it did all start with the legitimate possibility of it being a comfort food issue that tofu scramble might cure.
And while I'm here, I'd like to say that my favorite easy way to consume flax seed oil (which apparently loses all of it's goodness if cooked) is sprayed onto air popped popcorn with nutritional yeast sprinkled on top. That kills the omega-3 and the B12 birds with one stone! (As long as it's a yeast grown on a B12-containing culture.) -

(shhhh! ix-nay on the onspiracy-kay!)
Not to get too far off-topic and risk The Righteous Wrath of Jenni, but does anyone else here freeze their tofu before preparing it? I freeze both silken tofu and regular block tofu, because it totally changes the texture. Silken tofu comes out like monkfish, and block tofu comes out like chicken.
Just snip the corner off the aesceptic box or puncture the plastic sheet on top the tub, and drain off as much water as you can. Then stick it in the freezer for at least 2 or 3 days, until it's frozen _hard_. Then transfer it back to the fridge, or leave it out for a few hours to thaw. Open up the box or tub and press gently on the tofu with a folded paper towel, to drive out excess water. I like to cube up the block tofu and marinate it for a half-hour in a mix of spices, salt and whatever flavorings I want, then use it in a tofu scramble.
Silken tofu, I like to cut into two thin fillets, and sautee in a non-stick pan. First I mince a shallot and a couple of mushrooms, sautee them covered, over low heat, for about 10 minutes, until they're translucent. Then, put a pad of marge (I like Earth Balance) in the pan, turn it up to high, and put the fillets in, getting them slightly charred on each side. I throw in a little white wine or sake to deglaze the butter, and serve immediately.
Oh--and whenever I feel tempted by eggs (and it's not too often), I just have to consider that an egg is really just an embryo and placenta, the consistancy of mucus. That usually does the trick for me. (insert queasy emoticon here)

Re: Why am I craving eggs?
Tue, January 17, 2006 - 9:39 PMIt's definately some subconcious association, and alas, tofu scramble is not cutting it. I'm not even craving it. I am however, not eating any letchicin, and will pick some up tomorrow. I'm also going to be more on top of my flax oil. I could probably be more regular about it. It's not like I don't drink a smoothie every morning, so that shouldn't be too hard to do.
Thanks all! -

Re: Why am I craving eggs?
Wed, January 18, 2006 - 7:18 AMSometimes cravings are our bodies telling us we need something...but sometimes definitely not...for example: When I crave something really junky, sweet and unhealthy, it's not because my body needs saturated fat sugar and way too much sodium.
Sometimes a craving is a comfort thing, as someone already mentioned.
One time I was craving something non-vegan, too, and thought it was so strange. After some thought, I realized that I was craving it because I had a fond childhood memory that went along with that particular food. It was a comfort thing. In my childhood, when I ate that food, happy things were going on around me, and so eating that food made me feel happy. So, I was craving the happiness I used to feel when eating that food (and we all crave tastes simply because they taste good sometimes).

Re: Why am I craving eggs?
Wed, January 18, 2006 - 10:47 AMThis is definately not a psychological craving. To be honest, i never really liked eggs before I went vegan. I used to hardboil them and then pick out the yolks and wash the excess yolk off the whites before I would eat them. The only other time I've had full body cravings like this was when I first went vegan, and started craving falafel and mushrooms, two foods that I had previously HATED. Now I can't get enough of either. My body was definately telling me I was lacking something that I needed in those two foods. -

Thu, January 19, 2006 - 8:28 AMthanks for the recommendatio for the OmegaZen; I had read about it on VeganEssentials ( www.nexternal.com/vegane/Product161 ), but never tried it before. Could you recommend a methylcobalin supplement too?

Re: Why am I craving eggs?
Thu, January 19, 2006 - 12:10 PMI use the Jarrow brand methylcobalamin supplement..Im sure there are better ones..but its the best one I could find at rainbow grocery.
You can also get excellent DHA and b12 supplements from the tree of life rejuvenation center www.treeoflife.nu
They may not be listed in the catalog but if you call and ask you can get them...

Re: Why am I craving eggs?
Thu, January 19, 2006 - 1:17 PMThe local grocery store (here in western NY) sells Twinlab B-12 Dots (vegetarian formula), which are sublingual cyanocobalamin (vitamin B12) supplements. (I'm guessing that's what you're looking for.)
The label says they're made by Twin Laboratories in Utah, so I'm assuming they're probably available on the west coast, too. And they're cherry-flavored. Yummy. -

Re: Why am I craving eggs?
Fri, January 20, 2006 - 1:02 AMtwinlabs products are crap. You want methylcobalamin anyways..because its enzymatically active....i felt the difference in my hands..its alive and vibrates. Cyanocobalamin isnt and doesnt...

Re: Why am I craving eggs?
Thu, July 9, 2009 - 7:23 AMPerhaps you are pregnant. The same thing happened to me. I always hated eggs, always! Then for about 2 months straight all I wanted was eggs. 24 hours a day. Eggs over easy with cheeze whiz toast, egg drop soup, egg fou young. Anything with eggs all the time, I couldn't think about anything else. Then people started telling me that eggs is a very very common pregnancy craving, and sure enough, I was 2.5 months pregnant. :-)
