veganism makes you fart?

topic posted Sun, January 6, 2008 - 12:01 PM by  Jenn
So, I've been vegetarian for about 12 years, and have now been vegan for just over two months. I have noticed that I have become much more gassy since the switch and I have to say, the scent is not pleasant. My husband is about to stop sleeping with me unless I figure out what's happening.

Did anyone else have this problem? What did you find to be the culprit? The only major change in my diet is that I have been eating some more wheat carbs than usual and cut out cheese. I know that tofu, soymilk and such does this to me, but it happens even on days I don't eat that stuff.

What the hell?

I do not know. I know that I should not eat falafel balls even though I love them: they give me gas etc.
Maybe soy is hard fo ryo to digest-thre are other protein sources. I do know that beans that have not soaked long enough will cause gas.

    Good luck!

I've never had this mythological problem. I remember a guy telling me that he dated a vegan before and that the guy had bad gas and smelly poop, and I was just like "How did you know what his poop smelled like??" It all depends on what you eat and what your digestive system is like. Actually, before going vegan, dairy used to give me this, um, stank problem, but after I went fully vegan I never had anything out of the ordinary. OK, y'all know way too much about my ass now....

Suggestion, try including digestive enzymes with every meal. I do, and it mostly eliminates gas. As a vegan I have no more of a problem than when I was a vegetarian only, from what I can tell. Vegetarian digestive enzymes can be found in health food stores or GNC. I like the GNC Multi-Enzyme Formula vegetarian capsules. They work better than any others I've tried.

I had a bit of a problem when I first started, I will reluctantly admit...actually, a lot of people have problems when they change their diet. Usually your system will get used to it after awhile. For example, when I ate an unhealthy diet (meat, processed foods, etc) soy made me very gassy, but it doesn't anymore-processed foods do now.

It can take a day for foods to do their fermenting in your intestines, hence the time delay when you eay soy. At least this is what happens to me. You might want to clean out your colon. Could be that there is something still stuck in there causing the gas.

I only get gaseous when I've had raw garlic, too much tofu or broccoli and when I have a lot of processed soy products in my diet. Maybe you should write down everything you eat in a week and see what the culprit could be. Then try enzymes or putting different foods together and see what helps.

Thanks for the responses. I have a general idea of foods that affect me so far... and dairy was a huge culprit. I would have expected the reaction to decrease, not increase. So puzzling. I will definitely try the digestive enzymes.

I am actually fasting right now on the master cleanse, so when I get off it, it will be easy to try to identify any new offending foods.

Thanks for addressing a somewhat embarrassing topic. I knew I could count on you folks.

"never fear" i told him. i made soy rizo pasta sauce, tofurkey italian sausages, and a hungry man portion of brussel sprouts. now that's some wicked fart POWER!
