I have a friend who's got gophers in her flower be and I'm trying to convince her to NOT put out traps while her neighbor is telling her that's the ONLY thing that works.
Does anyone have any experience getting rid of gophers without killing them?

Mon, June 15, 2009 - 8:47 PMI don't remember the brand name of the repellent I used to use, I used it for moles quite effectively and I've heard that the same repellent is effective for gophers. It's a castor oil mix with water basically. You spray it onto the soil and the smell bothers them enough that they will leave. It doesn't smell bad to us, though, sort of like elmer's glue. One of the links says it works by coating the grubs moles eat with the castor oil and making them taste bad.
I found they'd come back after a few months, then I'd spray the ground again, and sure enough they'd move out.
I've searched a bit just now looking for the product I used to use, didn't find it in a short search. But I did see some others that look like the same thing, more or less. Here are some links:
www.nottonight.com/web/mole...nt5.shtml
www.pestproducts.com/scoot_mole.htm
www.baar.com/moles.htm
www.havahart.com/store/ani...nimal/mole
It's worth a try, before using traps. I know first hand it works for moles, I have only heard that it repels gophers, too. One of the above links says it works on gophers... -

How can you tell a mole problem from a gopher problem?
# Moles leave a volcano-shaped mound with an exit hole in the center. Gopher mounds are shaped like crescents or fans, with the exit hole to the side of the mound.
# Moles burrow just below the surface, so tunnels are often visible. Gophers dig down as much as 6 ft. for nesting and food storage.
# Gophers eat underground parts of garden plants. Moles eat grubs, soil-dwelling insects and earthworms but damage plant roots with their extensive tunneling. -

Re: Gophers
Tue, June 16, 2009 - 8:44 PMWhen my ex and I were living in a rural environment, our veggie garden was being decimated by gophers. We had access to live traps and trapped and moved about a dozen and our problems stopped. I'm not sure if it was moving them or the fact we used our gray water to water the garden. The deer and rabbits would mostly ignore the garden which wasn't fenced. We used Dr Bronners peppermint soap to wash dishes so I always kind of suspected that might have been the repellent. PS We also asked nicely and, in the case of the gophers, not so nicely, that they not eat our food, so maybe that helped too!
