Army to shoot live pigs for medical drill
By JAYMES SONG, Associated Press Writer
Fri Jul 18, 4:27 AM ET
The Army says it's critical to saving the lives of wounded soldiers. Animal-rights activists call the training cruel and outdated.

Despite opposition by the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, the Army is moving forward with its plan to shoot live pigs and treat their gunshot wounds in a medical trauma exercise Friday at Schofield Barracks for soldiers headed to Iraq.

Maj. Derrick Cheng, spokesman for the 25th Infantry Division, said the training is being conducted under a U.S. Department of Agriculture license and the careful supervision of veterinarians and a military Animal Care and Use Committee.

"It's to teach Army personnel how to manage critically injured patients within the first few hours of their injury," Cheng said.

The soldiers are learning emergency lifesaving skills needed on the battlefield when there are no medics, doctors or facility nearby, he said.

PETA, however, said there are more advanced and humane options available, including high-tech human simulators. In a letter, PETA urged the Army to end all use of animals, "as the overwhelming majority of North American medical schools have already done."

"Shooting and maiming pigs is outdated as Civil War rifles," said Kathy Guillermo, director of PETA's Laboratory Investigations Department.

The Norfolk, Va.-based group demanded the exercise be halted after it was notified by a "distraught" soldier from the unit, who disclosed a plan to shoot the animals with M4 carbines and M16 rifles.

"There's absolutely no reason why they have to shoot live pigs," PETA spokeswoman Holly Beal said.

The bloody exercise, she said, is difficult for soldiers because they sometimes associate the animals with their own pet dogs.

Cheng said the exercise is conducted in a controlled environment with the pigs anesthetized the entire time. He had "no doubt whatsoever" in the effectiveness of the instruction, which he called the best option available at the base.

"Those alternative methods just can't replicate what the troops are going to face when we use live-tissue training," he said. "What we're doing is unique to what the soldiers are going to actually experience."

Cheng didn't have details about the number of pigs, how they were acquired or the weapons involved in the training.

The soldiers being trained are with the 3rd Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division, which is deploying to Iraq this year.

"We understand (PETA's) concerns and point of view. At the same, the Army is committed to providing the soldiers with the best training possible," Cheng said.

Disappointed at the Army's decision, PETA on Thursday instructed its 2 million members to inundate the Army with calls and e-mails.

"We're hoping at the 11th hour here that we can have this stopped. We have to hang on to hope," Beal said.

PETA believes the U.S. military has conducted similar training at other bases using pigs and goats.

WHY I need it: I work at a small college, and we're self publishing a textbook for our freshman composition (e.g. ENGL 101) courses, and I just learned that we're definitely including an article entitled "Why I Stopped Being a Vegetarian" by Laura	Fraser. I suggested that we have a pro-veggie essay to balance out the view of this one, and the committee agreed, but I can't find one! HELPPPPPPPPP!

This essay by Fraser (read it here: http://www.randomhouse.com/pantheon/authors/laurafraser/vegetarian.html ) basically gives all the good reasons for being veggie or vegan, but then concludes with eating flesh is just too yummy to give up.

I tried scrambling them once when we were vegenarian but he didn't eat it; now I am vegan partly because he never took to meat or eggs so it became logical for our kitchen to switch to vegan foods....my philosophic leap came shortly after.

But it's just funny to find how many stories in children's books and rhymes have to do with eating meat! There are alot of farm references too. I guess that has to do with educating a child about daily activities. Children farm stories are to introduce the animals, where milk and eggs come from, and what we do with milk and eggs...to give them insight into daily cycles. But of course they don't say we kill the pig or cow or that meat comes from them.

I just have to tell stories about eggs and that people eat eggs. Milk isn't that hard because he nursed and he drinks soy milk, so it's "milk". But I make the story up saying that we ask the animalif we can use some of their eggs and the animal agrees to it. It's sharing in our story.

I am at the point in life of teaching vegan principles. It's cool because my kid is cool but I hope I don't fuck up somehow. It seems really daunting because I feel like I am turning my son against 99% of humanity.........I feel like I am teetering between being comfortable with my belief and being uncomfortable with making my child behave a certain way. Not eating meat is my viewpoint, you know.

I guess I should read up on how other parents have done this. Anyone have any help with this?

Wanna share strategies?

Here are some of mine:
1) only buy the vegetables/fruits that are reasonabley priced that week, and make meals from that starting point.
2) start serving soup as part of dinner each night (soups go a long way, are nutritious, recycle scrap vegetables and a few beans/grain into a new meal)
3) make my own salad dressing from now on

Plastic Bottle Ban?
Manufacturers, retailers, and regulatory agencies consider eliminating a potentially harmful chemical from plastic sport and baby bottles.
By Lisa Farino

Responding to growing consumer concern, sports-bottle maker Nalgene announced today that it will be phasing out the use of the chemical bisphenol-A (BPA) in its plastic containers over the coming months.

BPA is a common building block of hard polycarbonate plastics (such as sports bottles, baby bottles, and eye glasses) and is also found in the resin lining of metal food and beverage cans.

Because BPA mimics estrogen, there has been increasing concern that exposure, especially by fetuses, newborns, and infants, may cause long-term health impacts such as early puberty in girls, reproductive problems, and cancers later in life.

Nalgene currently makes about a half-dozen different sports bottles, including ones made from stainless steel and also BPA-free plastics. Only one of its six bottle types includes BPA. Customers who wish to buy BPA-free sports bottles before Nalgene’s phase-out is complete can visit the Nalgene Choice website to learn more about Nalgene’s current BPA-free options.

Canada Plans BPA Ban

Across the border, retailers throughout Canada have been releasing plans to remove BPA-containing sports and baby bottles from their shelves. On Wednesday, Wal-Mart Canada announced that it would immediately stop selling baby bottles, sippy cups, pacifiers, food containers, and water bottles that contain BPA.

Many of these retail changes followed an anonymous media leak earlier this week that Health Canada would declare BPA to be toxic.

The official announcement came today as Canada’s Minister of Health, Tony Clement, declared that the Canadian government is taking action to reduce BPA exposure, especially in newborns and infants.

“We have immediately taken action on bisphenol-A (BPA) because we believe it is our responsibility to ensure families, Canadians and our environment are not exposed to a potentially harmful chemical,” said Clement.

The Government of Canada is proposing a ban on polycarbonate baby bottles and strict limits on BPA in infant formula cans. The government is also seeking to work with industry to develop alternative food packaging. A 60-day public comment period on the proposal will begin tomorrow.

Will the US Follow Suit?

On Tuesday, the National Institute of Health’s National Toxicology Program (NTP) released its draft brief on BPA, which found that current levels of exposure to the chemical did pose “some concern” for fetuses, infants, and children. The main concerns were that exposures in these groups could potentially cause neural and behavioral problems, impact the prostate and mammary glands, and contribute to earlier onset of puberty in girls.

There are no immediate plans in the U.S. to regulate BPA in food and beverage containers.

The report wasn’t intended to make recommendations, says John Bucher, Associate Director of the National Toxicology Program. Rather, the goal was to pull together the literature on the subject, conduct a thorough scientific analysis, and make that information available to regulatory agencies.

“All we can do is point out where the exposures are coming from,” said Bucher. The two biggest culprits he identified were polycarbonate baby bottles and the linings of infant formula cans.

On Wednesday, The Washington Post reported that congressional Democrats were pushing for the FDA to regulate the presence of BPA in food containers and beverage bottles.

Although no regulatory agencies are required to take the report’s findings into account, Bucher says that some agencies—such as the FDA, the EPA, and the Consumer Product Safety Commission—could choose to use the NTP’s findings on BPA. Most likely, these agencies will, at the very least, wait until the draft report has been through a peer review process, which is scheduled for June 11, 2008.

Meanwhile, the NTP is accepting public comments about the BPA report.

What Should I Do?

While the NTP does not make specific recommendations about how other agencies should regulate BPA, they did offer the public some tips for reducing personal exposure if they were concerned. These included:

Don’t microwave polycarbonate plastic food containers. Polycarbonate is strong and durable, but over time it may break down from over use at high temperatures.
Polycarbonate containers that contain BPA usually have a #7 on the bottom.
Reduce your use of canned foods.
When possible, opt for glass, porcelain, or stainless steel containers, particularly for hot food or liquids.
Use baby bottles that are BPA free.

In Love and Light

Pritam

- the dust mites that get vacuumed up
- those critters that live on your body and get washed down the shower drain
- the ants you step on as you walk down the street
- the critters that die from being run over by your car
- the critters that die when the pesticides kill them for the cotton used to make your clothes (can you even by 100percent organically grown cotton underwear and socks???)
- the critters that are killed to make your vegetables, even organically grown food will have "collateral damage"
- the critters that are killed when the resources used for *everything* you use in this life are mined
- the critters killed by your companion animals, either directly or from the production of their food
- the critters killed by high transmission tower lines used for your electricity
- the critters sucked up by the jet engine used to transport your goods and mail
- and many more examples...

the point being, is that if we are complicit in an animals death and suffering for eating some obscure by-product of the dairy industry, then certainly we are complicit in animals pain, suffering, and death when we use a computer who's components are made of ingredients mined, when we wear non-organically grown cotton, when we use the postal system, when we take part in any aspect of society.

even when we eat grains and veggies! even my organically grown rice and quinoa caused suffering and death.

do you use plastics, wood, metals? then you are complicit.
are you alive and participating as a member of our society? then you are complicit!

it's not about becoming 100percent vegan and disparaging and judging others who are not, because the former is an impossibility and the latter is simply anti-social; it's about the journey towards living a more compassionate life. we need to support each other and our friends who are on this journey. some of us have only just begun to walk this path, others have been walking it for decades, some have chosen to sit down for a while and re-evaluate where they're at, others are striving for, and even mistakenly believe they can attain 100percent, and still others haven't begun but may at some point in their lives. or they may not. but for each of us, we need to show compassion and support to each other as human beings. this is what will create the most positive changes in our world.

a part of being vegan to me means showing compassion and love towards all living creatures, including us lowly and frequently pathetic human beings! this is what i've learned after two decades as a hardcore animal rights activist.

I'm a French native and was watching the French news when I heard about this story.
Sorry there is no translation at this time but I will try to provide one:
http://video.aol.com/video-detail/des-parents-vegetaliens-la-fillette-meurt-de-malnutrition/4085559841
There is also another video from another tv channel:
http://jt.france2.fr/13h/
the story starts at 11mns, and even if you're not a French speaker you might get parts of it reading the transcript located on the right of you screen under the headline: La fille de 11 mois d'un couple de végétaliens meurt de malnutrition (daughter of vegan couple dies of malnourishment).
This is horrible because of course it is so sad but this puts vegan and naturopaths (the parents are naturopaths and they run a little health food store in a tiny town in France) in a bad posture and I'm going to need some good arguments for my French folks who've heard this story and will be scared for me and my 5 yr. old, only we're not 100% vegan, more like 60% perhaps.
I was so bumped when I heard about his because if I was a typical mom or person and would hear this news I would surely think this is not a safe diet, only it seems that baby girl had a pneumonia (and a history of bronchitis and diarrhea...) and the reporter is saying she was not treated conventionally because the parents are naturopaths, so this story not only depicts the vegan diet as being poor and so on (they actually state in that video that baby girl was malnourished saying she was "only" breastfed and of a vegan mom etc etc, they then interview some Dr. or Pediatrics and nurses who say you can't have vitamin b12 and so on when not consuming animal products, the whole blahblah), but it gives an image of naturopathy as being unhealthy etc...
They are basically stating this baby girl died because of poor diet and poor medical or non medical treatment.
The couple have a 9 yr old, it's not stated if this 9 year old grew up with a vegan diet as well, I'd love to find out.
My friends and people who know me in France are going to freak out and be scared for me cause I'm always happy to tell them how good a vegan diet feels but I need some "backup", good information so I can let them know I'm okay (of course, again I'm not 100% vegan but still).
This news is not good for the vegan community in France, I wonder why they can do about it, I will be looking for more insight about the death of this little girl because we just do not have enough information, maybe she had a pre existing disposition or something.
This is not a post to bring controversy, I'm the first one to rave about going to our vegan Saturn cafe here is Santa Cruz and so on, and if you guys feel this should not be on this tribe let me know cause I know there has been some hot topics and posts in the past...
I just hope to find answers and insight, although we have little information here...
Thank you/merci.

I haven't done a thorough search, but I have noticed lately that several of my favorite candies contain gelatin and/or beeswax. :(

Do you guys know of any vegan jelly-like/chewy candies? I only eat them once every several weeks, but when I crave them, I REALLY crave them. But now, because of the non-vegan ingredients, I don't want them - but I still crave them like crazy! Please help!

Oh, and it's parve for passover.

Lentil beet burgers

INGREDIENTS:

1 tsp sea salt
1 tbsp mexican spice mix
1 tbsp sesame oil
8 cups of water
2 and 1/2 cups mixed yellow(or red) and green (not french) lentils
1/2 bunch cilantro, chopped
1 grated medium beet
1 cup nutritional yeast
2 to 3 tbsp balsamic vinagrette
1 packet matzoh ball mix
Wheat germ or corn meal
oil for frying
PREPARATION:
Boil water, lentils, salt, spice mix and oil, then simmer for 1/2 hour.
Mix cilantro and beet in large bowl.
Mix matzoh ball mix and nutritional yeast in small bowl.
Strain lentils well while hot, and put in large bowl over cilantro and beet. Let sit for 15 minutes.
Add the dry ingredients and vinagrette, and mix well.
Form into patties and coat with wheat germ or cornmeal, and freeze or fry in a lightly oiled frying pan until browned on both sides and heated through, about ten minutes.
Baking patties should also work well.

Hi tribe! How are you guys? I wanted to post this because I had an experience recently and wanted to share the ideas, and find out how other people think about this subject.

As you may know, I have been engaged in a dialogue with some of the Whole Foods staff in my area, trying to get them to provide more/better vegan options in their prepared foods section. This was after a notable decline in a store which, among the many Whole Foods I have been at over the years, has ranked near the bottom.

I was recently asked to explain to a team member at one of the stores about veganism. When initially asked this, I felt uncomfortable. Even though I have been vegan for many years, and I love vegan foods, I never thought of myself as any kind of authority. If I were ever asked to show people vegan dishes probably the only thing I could do is to break out a wok and make stir-fry with a lot of veggies and things thrown in. That is what I eat mostly anyways. I don't really get into elaborate cooking, and have preferred to eat things that are simple yet tasty and wholesome. I have however known people who had a talent for making lots of elaborate, excellent vegan dishes. I am more of the "throw everything in the wok" variety of cook and have always been happy eating that way.

So I was nervous about having to somehow represent veganism to a team leader. But when I was thinking about how non-vegans approach veganism, and what types of impressions they have about it, I kept feeling somehow restricted. In terms of the store offerings, I have been pointing out to staff how so many of the products contain this non-vegan ingredient or that. I think I started thinking about it in narrow terms and felt uncomfortable.

For me veganism is not at all about restrictions, about not having one item or another, but, conversely, about abundance. It is not a tedious excercise in picking items which lack this or that, but rather about practicing an art of discipline and knowlege which opens one up to an abundance of wonderful possibilities and experiences.

In short, the realization that came to me as I lay thinking about it the other night, was that veganism is nothing short of a fundamental revolution in how one approaches food, one's body, Earth, and energy at a primal level. No explaining of the mere presence or absence of certain food products or ingredients will ever really capture the meaning, and also the joy that one experiences, when one practices this art of discipline and knowlege through which one finds abundance and inner and outer peace.

To me each vegan in the world is like a revolutionary who has succeeded in fundamentally re-shaping the world into a place that is more harmonious and loving. For every heart, mind, and body that has carried out this transformation, the world becomes a place filled with light.

Hi tribe! I thought I would start this new topic on GMOs.

As a starting point, I highly recommend reading "The Documented Health Risks of Genetically Engineered Foods" http://www.seedsofdeception.com/Public/GeneticRoulette/HealthRisksofGMFoodsSummaryDebate/index.cfm

After you read this, you will probably be shocked.

Here is another good article, "The threat of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) on modern agriculture" which gives an indication of the seriousness of the threat to organic agriculture that GMOs pose:
http://www.quazen.com/Science/Agriculture/Genetically-Modified-Plants.76082

On the good news front, there is a project now which is intended to provide consumers with a clear non-GMO choice when purchasing foods. http://www.nongmoproject.org/

However, I am not aware of any stringent monitoring of the food supply in North America being done. Clearly, policies such as Whole Foods has seem to do more to condone GM contamination of the organic food supply than to take a stand against it:

http://www.wholefoodsmarket.com/issues/list_biotech.html

In Germany, Greenpeace has been very active in its campaign against GMOs and has done a lot of work to educate consumers about what they are eating.

Their "Einkaufsnetz" (Purchasing or Shopping Network) features GM as one of their main campaigns:

http://de.einkaufsnetz.org/gentechnik/

They put out a very well-made shopping guide called "Essen ohne Gentecknik" (Eating without GM) of which many thousands of copies have been distributed to consumers across the country. It is available as a download at: http://de.einkaufsnetz.org/download/%2026533.pdf

In the USA, the leading organization that is fighting GM foods is the Center for Food Safety: http://www.centerforfoodsafety.org/geneticall7.cfm

The 'Munchkin Cat has very short legs and cannot run as fast as a normal Cat so therefor He or She would be in grave(no pun intended) danger if (God forbid) let outside. That poor, unfourturanate Cat could get killed by a large Dog as a result of not being able to get away fast enough. And the breed of Cat with no fur would be in serious danger of developing severe Hypothermia if let outside on a very cold Day. A very old example of Unethical Animal Breeding is the Domestic Turkey. Just compare the Domestic Turkey to its Wild 'Cousin"and You would see exactly what I mean.

I am doing a little questionnaire for a project I am doing in my multi-cultural psychology class over human diversity. I choose to look into veganism/vegetarianism because it is something I am interesting in learning more about and maybe even becoming a practitioner of.

*Are you a Vegan or Vegetarian?
*What made you choose the one lifestyle over the other?
*How long have you a vegan/vegetarian?
*Favorite Recipe?
*Is it difficult finding meatless entrees at any casual dinning restaurant or fast food place?
*Do you try and convince people of the benefits of meatless living?
*Is there any special jargon in the vegan/vegetarian circles?
*Favorite meat substitute?
*What was the hardest product to give up in becoming a vegan/vegetarian?
*Get any meat cravings? Any frustrations with what is available for your needs?
*Special diet rules?
*Do you feel better overall? Like being less sick or stressed? Gotten any health benefits?

Feel free to answer all, some, or add some extra input of your own experience.

Did anyone else experience this? My hope is it will go away soon as my body adjusts to my healthier habits but any advice would be lovely...

True love and genuine compassion

Sought after in a sincere fashion

But to be these, you must see

Beyond your flesh, see the many

Notice yourselves in the others

Namely in the other creatures

Most of which termed animals

They are you and you are them

It then does not make any sense

To live on flesh and feed on pain

To subject your senses

To misery and defenses

To kill the gratifying holiness

Live on peace and joy and bliss

Quit not eating meat out of fear

Insight, rely on that since it is near

Do it only out of love, true love

The kind which only binds

Joining you and Me

In this never-ending journey

See the truth and claim your light

See pass the cooking flesh and sight

Look again and see My name

In yours and in them – it is all the same

Truly it is all the same

It is all the same

Breathe in delight and eat in glee

The only food blessed in free

The food that does not run

Fly or leap and cry or creep

The food that is motionless

But not out of fear or terror

No, my dear, this is only you

Tearing on your brother

Blessed are those who seek the truth

Blessed are those who only consume

The light and love and compassion

The devotion and pure affection

Of conjoining with the all of Me

For in them, I perpetually breathe

In all of My divine seeds

How can you sleep in joy?

When you devour another in ploy

How can you call My name?

And say that I blessed all of those

Who died in vain

Who died in vain

Who died in vain

You can live in endless peace

For indeed, this is the only way

For you to achieve world peace

You need to be the world of peace

You need to live on the heart and kiss

You need to shed your hateful feast

This, my dear, is the only way

This is the only way

This means not that they do not feel

For veggies live and breathe through skin

Their nervous system is differently wired

So they are far more silent

Some would say more resilient

They live in peace and stillness

They seem to exist in quietness

But there are those who can hear

The cry and fright of the silence

This is on an uncanny frequency

In another dimension, in buoyancy

But only some who truly fancy

The glorious, eternal real Me

These are those who can feel and see

The light and love for *all* the many

So how can you still ignore?

Do you wish to see the vital core?

Haven't you tried untangling the lore?

The lore of your conditioned mind

Of your subjugated twisted bile

The trap of you eating your kind

Food of love for all is plentiful

The secret, my dear, is bountiful

Food of flesh is another story

For it isn't environmental-friendly

The energy and efficiency

Of the tired, weary land

Falls short of your demands

Tears of distress in so many places

Famine plentiful in all spaces

You pray to Me to end world hunger

But you see, it is within your glorious power

To see and merge with your other selves

To shine the light of your truthful self

Blood and bones and marrow

All of these and a shadow

Just as capable of being in sorrow

They are very close to you

A brain and a heart just like you

They only wish to live in peace

Isn't this also what you wish?

So choose to live in harmony

With us and all and everybody

With your spirit and mind and body

Trade your hate with My ponies

Come and sing My serene symphony

So perpetuate with everybody

Oh, with every body

It is never too late

There is always now

Seek the truth and track the bait

Come on now, come take a bow

Come and be your true grand light

Come and see your endless light

Shining through the dark tunnel

Bursting through every channel

Come and shine and simply bind

With Me and them and all our kind

How many times need I say?

That I am with you in every way

I am with you in every way

So know and join with Me now

Come on now, let us be one

Let us be always one
Harder to find and way worth it. Called - Lehka Hlava which means "Clear Head" in Czech. Incredible food, incredible decor, incredible staff. Don't let anyone tell you Prague is all meat and potatoes. http://www.lehkahlava.cz/en_novinky.htm

Also found a great market plus restaurant/cafeteria that is totally vegan called Country Life.
The warm foods were a bit greasy but there was a wide variety in the buffet.

Didn't make it to Radost FX or Govinda's but there are also a chain of lttle cafe's called "Bio" cafes. They are healthy, not vegan but they have vegan options like hummus, salads, soups, etc.

Did anyone else have this problem? What did you find to be the culprit? The only major change in my diet is that I have been eating some more wheat carbs than usual and cut out cheese. I know that tofu, soymilk and such does this to me, but it happens even on days I don't eat that stuff.

My family are omnivore's. There were a lot of us at Christmas dinner. We had a few new people since a regular guest had gotten married. His new wife did not eat beef. As I was plating my food in the kitchen she asked for some as well, since the family was eating prime rib and beef ravioli. The conversation turned to why she did not eat beef. She said she ate chicken but was having a lot of stomach problems so her doctor told her to avoid beef and she felt much better. By this time I was back at the table and my aunt, the host of the dinner, started talking about how her friend found out she had cancer and it was traced to beef! When she realized what she was saying she had her hand on the big plate of beef and was motioning to it and her face just dropped and her husband laughed and said, "what are you doing!?" The whole table erupted in laughter. The joke the rest of the dinner was, "Hey, can you pass the cancer?" "Would you like more gravy with your cancer?" "What should we have for dinner next year? Leukemia?"

It was certainly funny at the time because it was such a huge blunder for the host to make. My poor Aunt! She was so embarrassed! I felt sorry for her. But, it made me feel great about the choices I've made. I wish it was video taped so I could play it back for them when I turn them all vegetarian and we can laugh about how silly it was to be eating meat in the first place.

The sad part is they all went ahead and ate the beef and made light of the topic because otherwise they could not have eaten it. The length people will go to justify their eating habits. I saw it right there, at the table. Comments like, "I don't care! I just love it!". Yuck!

Families. What are ya gonna do!

Teehee..... K, now I'm not religious, but when I went to log in to Yahoo this mourn, on the front page was this video talking about a 72 year old preacher who is drawing crowds in by the hundreds to his seminars. They don't really come to see him Preaching about God, per say, but to see him talk about Vegetarianism! Like wow eh!.... He says people should all go back to the way that God directed them to eat in Genesis. He runs around the room full of energy talking about Vegetariansim. He was diagnosed with having a tumor when he was 42 and changed his diet.

He preaches about "How to Eliminate Sickness". Reverend George Malkmus tells his followers how he healed his own colon cancer and other diseases more than 20 years ago. This is what is attracting people to his seminars. Yeay.... I say go for it! Wake up america!

Of course I am pagan / pantheist, and not into dogmatic religion AT ALL, but to have mainstream Americans start changing their diet as a whole is good ya?

My 17 yr old niece, after being vegetarian for several years, recently went total vegan. The problem is she really has no idea what she needs to eat. She really can't live off chips & salsa and rice.

Now she has a kidney infection. She's doing well and should be out of the hospital tomorrow after a week of feeding off an IV tube.

My questions are: What should she eat that will help her gain her strength back while keeping in line with her dietary wishes? Once she's back to full strength what are some good vegan products and/or cookbooks so my sister can make sure she's eating proper meals.

I figured there are some experienced vegans here (Maria!). Thanks.

LONDON, ENGLAND, December 2, 2007: Women can give their children a lifelong taste for healthy foods simply by eating them during pregnancy or while breastfeeding, researchers have found.

"Flavors from the mother's diet are transmitted through amniotic fluid and mother's milk. A baby learns to like a food's taste when the mother eats that food on a regular basis," said Julie Mennella of Monell Chemical Senses Center, a research institute in Philadelphia. The technique can work for a variety of vegetables. In one experiment Mennella gave carrot juice to a group of pregnant women and to a separate group of breastfeeding women. Their babies were subsequently far keener on carrots than those born to women who had not been given carrot juice. A similar experiment with fruit showed that babies whose mothers ate raw peaches while breastfeeding were far more willing to accept them in their own food.

Personally, I believe that there can be different degrees of being vegan. At the VERY least, I think we would all agree that a vegan is someone who does not eat any animals or animal products. In a more orthodox, strict sense, a vegan is a person who not only does not EAT animal products, but also does not USE any of them... from anything to leather, wool, pearls and silk. I have lot of vegan friends who have been for dozens of years, but might own a pair or two of wool socks. I would still consider them vegan, at least to a degree (dietary). They still consider themselves to be as well, obviously. Do you guys have any wise words to say? What do you think?

I found a main dish that I can recreate all vegan style, but the only dessert I could remotely even try to attempt to substitute everything for vegan ingredients calls for farmer's cheese. According to wikipedia, farmer's cheese is basically cottage cheese with the liquid pressed or absorbed out of it. I swear I've seen vegan cottage cheese in a store before, but is that going to be impossible to recreate? It's basically sweetened farmer's cheese baked inside apples with black currant syrup over the top, so anyone have any ideas as to what I can substitute? Vegan cheese would be kind of gross, and I'm not sure about using silken tofu because the consistency might be kind of oogy. Padek man?

And I ordered some vegan razors from PETA but they SUCKED!!! there's something about the no back three blade razor that just rocks!

JOY OF JOYS!!! I have found the environmentally friendly and VEGAN alternative.

Preserve by Recycline makes razors out of recycled yogurt tubs (so its reused plastic) ...okay so it's yogurt tubs so not 100% vegan ;-)
and their three blade razor is as good if not better than gillette mach 3.
(I did a test: I had a two new mach 3 blades left, and I shaved half my face with the mach 3 and half with the preserve and the skin felt and razors handled the same. I asked my wife and she chose the preserve side for smoothness :-)

http://www.recycline.com/products/preserverazortriple.html

the biggest non-vegan issue is the lubricating strip, well, I spoke with the manufacturers and their lubricating strip has no animal ingredients in it and of course they do no animal testing.

here's the official email that I just received from them:

"Hello Antoine,
You request for information on our razors was passed onto me by one of our customer service associates. As I understand it you had questions on our razors, specifically the lubricating strip. Below is a statement that reflects our razor policy from the blades to the handles:

Our razor handles are vegan. No animals oils or other by-products are used in the manufacture of the handles. The lubrication strip contains no animal ingredients or by-products. The lubricating strips are made up of Vitamin E oil, aloe and a vegan colorant in a synthetic base which is also vegan. The razor blades themselves are not considered vegan, as animal oil is used to cool the grinders used to sharpen the blades.

In addition, I would say that we do plan to attempt to influence this supplier in a few ways on their manufacturing choices. But at this time, our volumes are too low to have any influence. We did choose this supplier, though, because they have had a "no animal testing" policy from the founding of their company.

If you have any additional questions on our products and their composition, please feel free to write me at this email address.

Thank you for your interest in Recycline!
